1. Whatโ€™s your investment philosophy?
Do they have a clear strategy, or are they just reacting to the market like everyone else?

2. What services do you provide?
Are they just picking stocks, or do they offer:
โ€ข Tax planning
โ€ข Estate strategies
โ€ข Retirement planning
โ€ข Real financial advice beyond investments?

3. How often will we meet, and how accessible are you?
A great advisor doesnโ€™t just check in once a year. Whatโ€™s their communication plan?

4. What are your fees, and whatโ€™s the all-in cost?
You’re probably paying too much if you donโ€™t know what youโ€™re paying.

5. Whatโ€™s your onboarding process like?
An organized, structured process now means fewer headaches later.

6. Are you a fiduciary? What certifications do you hold? They don’t belong on your payroll if theyโ€™re not legally required to act in your best interest.

7. How do you get paid?
โ€ข Commission-based?
โ€ข Fee-only?
โ€ข Flat fee?

Incentives drive behavior. Could you make sure their pay structure benefits you, not just them?

8. Where do you have custody of client funds? If your money isnโ€™t held at a trusted third-party custodian (Schwab, Fidelity, etc.), thatโ€™s a red flag. Many of the most notable frauds and financial tomfoolery would have been avoided with this point (Examples Bernie Madoff, Allen Stanford & Tom Petters)

9. Whatโ€™s the succession plan?
Advisors retire. Advisors die. Who takes over when theyโ€™re gone?

Or better yet, should you hire someone younger than you who will still be working when you need them most?

A great advisor welcomes these questions.
If they hesitate, dodge, or give vague answers,
